Day 1 : FORTALEZA - JERICOACOARA / public bus

We leave the hotel at 09:30 for a private transfer to the rodoviaria (bus station). Departure of the public bus for Jericoacoara at 10:30. Arrival at Fortaleza in the late afternoon after a 200 miles, 4 ½ to 5-hour, trip. We take a taxi to the hotel at the arrival in Fortaleza (cost from $ 7 US to $ 11 US).
Meals not included. Night in hotel.
Option: private transportation  Fortaleza - Jericoacoara.

In the morning, departure by dune buggy for an excursion in the surrounding areas of Jericoacoara.
After a bath in the fresh waters of the lagoa Azul, we take a lunch break near the lagoa Paraíso.
In the afternoon, we continue on to the "pedra furada" (the pierced stone), and the "pedra do frade" (the monk’s stone).
Return to Jericoacoara at the end of the day.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.
Option: extra(s) day(s) in Jericoacoara offering numerous activities (kite surf, windsurf, trek, horseback rides, massages…).

The departure time from Jericoacoara towards Parnaíba depends on the tide. Following a track skirting the shore in our dune buggy, we pass the minuscule village of Tatajuba, with its bay, its dunes and its coconut tree plantations representing, for a lot of travelers, one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Ceará.
The 2nd barge crossing takes place in the fishing community of Guriú beach where we cross the Coreaú River. On the other side, is located the little town of Camocim. While the men fight against the winds and the waves on their fragile instable jangadas (typical crafts of the Brazilian Nordeste), the women, on the shore, patiently embroider the well-known lace of this area, which particular technique is transmitted across the generations.
A vehicle awaits us to drive the 75 miles still separating us from Parnaíba.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

In the morning, we leave from "Porto dos Tatus" to the discovery of the delta das Américas by private motorboat.
A good half-day long navigation awaits us. Encompassing portions of the States of Piaui and of Maranhão, the delta spreads over 2700 square miles and includes 85 islands.  It offers a complexity comparable to those encountered on the Nile or the Mekong.
Back early afternoon, we head for Paulinos Neves with our 4WD.
For 3 hours, the track takes us successively from deserted beaches to virgin dunes, and we cross a few modest fishing villages appearing to have crossed, intact, the last 5 centuries: we are in one of those places emanating the so particular atmosphere of "end of the world"...
We arrive in Paulino Neves in the afternoon. End of day open that you can use to stroll though the village and surrounding areas in search of the best viewpoint from which to watch the sunset over the ocean.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada (basic comfort).

In the morning, we travel by canoe (or sail barge) along the river skirting the Pousada. We pass by igarapés (waterways) and other types of mangrove. The smoothness of our craft allows us to hear or spot monkeys and birds.
After 2 hours of quiet navigation, we reach the delta of Rio Novo. A 4WD awaits us to take us to the Lençóis-Maranhenses.
Departure depends on the tide, as, for many miles,  the track follows the beaches between the ocean and the mangrove. After a drive of a few hours, we finally arrive in Caburé, a fishing village lodged between the ocean, the dunes and Río Preguiças.
Open program of a few hours allowing for bathing (fresh, brackish or salt water?), enjoying a nap in a hammock or taking a hike in the sand dunes.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

We follow Rio Preguiças to Barreirinhas by private motorboat. The shores of the river appear in their entire splendor: mangrove, igarapés (waterways), buritis, açaizeiros, coconut trees, tucunzeiros and never very far, a colorful fauna: herons, kingfishers and if we are lucky, guarás (a striking red ibis typical of this area).
As we enter deeper inland, the dunes appear; we stop at Vassouras and at Mandacaru, a village endowed by a lighthouse offering from its top a panoramic view of its surroundings.
We arrive late afternoon in the village of Barreirinhas on the shores of the river.  Just beyond the sand dune, spreads the Lençóis desert.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

In our 4WD, we enter the heart of the Lençóis and the superb lagunas Bonita et Azul. We can freely stroll through the dunes and bathe in the wonderful fresh water pools.
Return to Barreirinhas in the afternoon, then public van to São Luis (4 to 5h).
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.
Option: flight over the Lençóis (Cessna type plane – max 5/6 per – 30-minute flight).
Dozens of lagunas spread under our eyes, giving us a show of a striking natural beauty.
A unique and unforgettable experience above the desert decorated with green and blue lagunas.

Our English-speaking guide meets us at the pousada at 09:00 for the town visit.
Half-day stroll in the historical center of this unique town founded by the French in Brazil, in 1612.
During the 17th century, after their expulsion by the Portuguese, the town prospered thanks to the extraction of cotton and of Babaçu. From this sumptuous time remains the magnificent group of building covered with azulejos (ceramic tilework), registered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Meals not included.
Option : hotel night.
