Congonhas

« The Way of the Cross and the twelve Prophets », the collection of sculptures by Master Aleijadinho in the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matozinhos de Congonhas, is considered the highest achievement Brazilian Baroque art. It expresses the great sculptor’s passion, in the form of a life-size sculpture of Christ.

The Baroque style was born from a style based on the richness of form and decoration. Master Aleijadinho contributed with new dimensions to the particular Baroque style of Minas Gerais, for example, in the expression he gives to beautiful faces and in the in the human representation of angels, prophets and other apostles.

São João del Rei

All the religiousness of the Portuguese colonial period may be seen in Sao Joao Del Rei, expressed by the devotion of its inhabitants during the Holy Week, and at holy days all along the year. A magnificent art piece, remarkable for its wood and stone works, the church of São Francisco de Assis constitutes master Aleijadinho first creation using curved lines (notice its atrium in the shape of a lyre, surrounded by a marble balustrade).
Between São João del Rei and Tiradentes you will have the opportunity to travel in the little steam train called "Maria Fumaça" and experience the atmosphere of a voyage like those that existed at the beginning of the twentieth century (on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays). The voyage lasts 30 minutes. It leaves from São João del Rei at 10:00 and at 15:00. The return is at 11:00 and 17:00. The railroad museum of the Sao Joao del Rei Railway Station helps revive the history of trains all over the world. The first Baldwin locomotive used at the inauguration voyage of the "Estrada de Ferro Oeste e Minas" in August 1881 is in exhibition here.

Tiradentes

Undoubtedly, Tiradentes constitutes the most romantic visit of all the colonial cities of Minas Gerais. The best thing to do is to leisurely stroll around its narrow streets, enjoying each place for it’s own particular beauty. The beauty of the town is enriched by the tropical environment created by the Mata Atlantica surrounding it as well as its elevated location on the slopes of the Serra de Sao Jose. The nearby foothills offer numerous and pleasant footpaths.
Through the centuries, Tiradentes has preserved all its charms from the opulent era of the gold fever. The revolutionist Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, "Tiradentes" (“dentist” in slang) was born here. After being murdered, during the “Conjuration Mineira”, he became the great martyr of the Republic.

The "Matriz" church of Santo Antônio de Tiradentes is one of the most beautiful examples of Brazilian Baroque art. It has preserved a Portuguese organ from the eighteenth century, painted by Manuel Vitor de Jesus. Its façade was one of Aleijadinho’s last projects in 1810.

Belo Horizonte

Established in 1897 as the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte is today the third city of Brazil, after Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The most visited site of the city are the architectural delights located at the "Pampulha", created by Oscar Niemeyer, the designer of the Capital, Brasilia. This architectural ensemble is formed by the church of São Francisco de Assis, the "Casa do Baile", the Yacht Club and the Museum of Contemporary Art. However, the reason that Belo Horizonte is considered a rising modern city vibrating with new life is it’s great nightlife.

The night starts at Savassi, concentrating the best restaurants, hotels and bars of the city. The colonial village of Sabara is only 16 miles away. Sabara was the first important mining centre, and at the beginning of the eighteenth Century, it was one of the wealthiest cities in the world as its dwellings, churches, fountains and sacred art testify.
