The "Fernando de Noronha" archipelago is formed by 21 islands created more than 10 million years ago by a volcanic eruption. It is located 216 miles off the coast. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the archipelago is a breath of fresh air. In 1989, it was declared Marine National Park. The visitor who took the time to visit is greeted with magnificent sub-tropical vegetation.
The possibilities of scuba diving are excellent. Thousands of turtles have chosen this place as their home, and even though it is forbidden to swim with the dolphins; it is none the less possible to observe them from the magnificent nearby beaches: Praia da Quixaba, Praia do Leão, Praia do Bode, Praia do Boldró, Praia do Atalaia, Praia do Sancho or Praia da Conceição.
From the peak of "Morro do Pico", the visitor has an unmatchable view of the islands. The priority here is to protect the environment. Building is forbidden, and living conditions are still quite primitive. The visitor must pay an environmental tax. Given that access by sea is difficult, the best means to reach the archipelago is by air; this makes access to and life on this tropical paradise relatively onerous, because almost all the local goods must be brought from the mainland. |
